Globally, gorillas especially the endangered mountain species, face unprecedented threats from habitat destruction, poaching, disease, and climate change. Their numbers are still drastically low just over 1000 individuals alive in the wild and are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN’s Red List, which continues to push these subspecies to the brink of potential extinction.
Without a global conservation movement centered towards creating more awareness, they continue to be threatened majorly due to conflict with humans, which is made worse by the living conditions of people surrounding gorilla habitats due to poverty, lack of social services and high human population growth rates.
WGM unites runners, conservationists, and nature lovers from across the world in a symbolic and practical effort to safeguard these magnificent primates. Proceeds from the marathon directly fund anti-poaching patrols, community education, habitat restoration, and scientific research, providing sustained support to frontline conservation initiatives. Over time, this growing platform aims to foster harmonious human-wildlife coexistence and empower local communities to see gorilla protection as an economic and ecological asset.
By participating in or supporting the World Gorilla Marathon, every individual becomes a stakeholder in a cause greater than themselves, the survival and resurgence of one of humanity’s closest relatives in the wild. Together, step by step, we can help rebuild gorilla populations and secure their future for generations to come.
