ABOUT

WORLD GORILLA MARATHON™

Our conservation awareness efforts ensure that our shared mission has an impact that is not only immediate, sustainable, but also empowering the livelihoods of local people in surrounding communities through;

i). Protecting and Saving gorillas

We foster conservation efforts by mobilizing global support and empowering local action through collaboration with local conservation organisations, International Organizations and government agencies which are at the frontline of conservation, every single day working to ensure the survival of gorillas. This is normally through supporting anti-poaching patrols, habitat preservation, and gorilla behavioral monitoring, ensuring these endangered species are safeguarded in their natural environments. We foster an integrated model of shared responsibility and coexistence which not only strengthens ongoing conservation efforts, but also building resilience within the communities that champion the long-term survival of gorillas and the ecosystems they call home.

ii). Fostering global solidarity through sport

More than a marathon, but rather a unifying force. We bridge eminent conservationists, passionate athletes and well-wishers from around the world together in support of a shared cause: protecting endangered gorillas and uplifting the communities that live alongside them. By participating in this unique event, you become part of a global movement that transcends borders, cultures, and differences.

The marathon harnesses the remarkable power to inspire collective action while raising awareness about conservation and climate challenges, which promotes inclusivity, and mutual respect. Participants, whether running on the streets of Kampala or joining virtually from across the world, carry a common message of hope, resilience, responsibility for the endangered gorillas and the planet at large while amplifying voices for our shared commitment to sustainability.

iii). Community awareness

We champion community awareness as vital tools for lasting conservation and peaceful co-existence between humans, gorillas, and their natural habitats. Through partnerships with local schools, conservation groups, and veterinaries/primatologists, we deliver targeted education on wildlife protection, ecosystem balance, and the risks of human-wildlife conflict. Culturally sensitive outreach programs and community dialogues promote respect for gorillas and the environment, while highlighting the shared benefits of conservation. By empowering people with knowledge and fostering pride in their natural heritage, we transform communities into active custodians of the environmental. This inclusive, knowledge-driven approach ensures that conservation is not just a mission, but a shared way of life across gorilla inhabitant and the world at large.

iv). Building community resilience

We are strengthening the ability of host communities to adapt and thrive amid environmental, social, and economic challenges through targeted investments in access to education, healthcare and disease prevention, clean water systems, environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihoods. In parallel, we collaborate with primatology and veterinary organizations to promote the health and survival of endangered gorillas while protecting public health in nearby communities. As we recognize the close human-gorilla interaction in conservation areas, we support joint health monitoring programs for early detection of zoonotic diseases, reducing risks to both people and gorillas, of which these integrated initiatives strengthen conservation outcomes and foster sustainable coexistence with nature.

v). Upholding excellence in athleticism

We are delivering a professionally managed, world-class marathon experience that meets the highest international standards. Welcoming elite and recreational runners alike, we are enhancing race-day safety, accurate timing, medical support, and course quality, and we will continue elevating the event’s stature as a premier running destination that inspires peak performance.

vi). Volunteers Program

Our collaborations with local conservation organizations, regulatory authorities, and global educational and research institutions often offer structured volunteer placements for individuals undertaking primatology related research and other environmental conservation works. Our research volunteers can engage in gorilla health and behaviour monitoring, ecological research, habitat restoration, community sensitization, and sustainable tourism initiatives. By aligning with local laws and conservation priorities, the volunteer program ensures ethical, impactful involvement. Such partnerships not only provide practical learning experiences but also strengthen grassroots conservation efforts, support scientific research, and empower local communities. Through this model, we leverage on global expertise by working with global research universities/organisations, with local action to protect endangered gorillas and their fragile ecosystems.

World Gorilla Marathon™ envisions serving as a symbol of what’s possible when conservation awareness, Sport (running) and global solidarity move in stride.
